Club Fidentia Youth Leadership Training (1-day Outdoor Experiential Outing) Collaboration with NIE student teachers

ABOUT

For the very first time, Club Fidentia has collaborated with a group of student teachers from National Institute Education (NIE), group name - Transformers to organize a 1-day fun-filled outdoor event for the youths of Club Fidentia. This is also part of the student teachers service-learning community outreach program, “Group Endeavours in Service Learning” (GESL)
The 1-day outdoor Experiential Outing comprises a half day amazing race held at NIE campus followed by a half day dragon boating event at Bedok Reservoir.
The event started off with ice breaker activities that will help the participants to get to know each other. Other interesting activities include Human Tangle and Amazing Race, all of which will provide the participants with the opportunity to acquire foundational skills that are relevant to leadership and teamwork. The highlight of the day will be the dragon boating event as this activity will allow the participants to cooperate and work together as a team.

TARGET GROUP

The 1-day Outdoor Experiential Day is catered to youths from Club Fidentia ranging from the age of 12 - 18 years old from low-income families. A total of 28 youths participated. The youth leadership training focuses primarily on teamwork and leadership skills.

THE OBJECTIVES

Objective 1: Identifying, accepting and appreciating differences within the team

Being able to identify, accept and appreciate differences within the team is one of the key abilities that a good leader possesses. Through the activities in the workshop, participants will learn the skill of identifying strengths and abilities of each team member. Participants with low self-esteem will hence benefit from this workshop as they will understand their own strengths better.

Objective 2: Improving interpersonal skills

As a team works together to achieve a common goal through mutual understanding and interdependence, there is a need for participants to have good interpersonal skills. They will also learn how to voice their opinions and disagreements in a tactful manner during pre-activity discussions.

Objective 3: Instilling values like perseverance, sportsmanship and discipline in the participants

Through a series of physical activities presented in the form of engaging games and the acquisition of a new skill - dragon boating, important values such as discipline, perseverance, sportsmanship are communicated to the participants. This will enable the participants to gain new experiences and make self-discovery.

REFLECTION

At the end of the day, youths are to reflect on some of the concepts and experiences they had throughout the event. Emphasizing on the objectives, all youths acknowledged and agreed that when it comes to teamwork, it is about overcoming differences and supporting each other in the team to work towards their common goals.
